Winifred Broom Poole, 101, of Summit Hills Drive, and a longtime resident of Cross Anchor, died Monday, September 28, 2009, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Born December 9, 1907, in Spartanburg, SC, she was the daughter of the late James Fred and Mary Elizabeth Fowler Broom and the wife of the late Mack Collier Poole, Jr. A 1928 graduate of Winthrop College and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, she was a retired librarian for 30 years at Cross Anchor, Clinton, and Evans Junior High Schools. She was an active member of Fernwood Baptist Church, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Business and Professional Women. Survivors include a son, Dr. Mack C. Poole, III and his wife Bert of Lyman; a daughter, Elizabeth P. Godfrey and her husband Joe of Forest City, NC; two grandchildren, Lesley Howard and her husband Dick of Sapphire Valley, NC, and J. Brannon Godfrey, Jr. and his wife Leslie of Winchester, VA; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two grandchildren, Mark Collier Poole and Elizabeth Lee Godfrey; and a sister. Visitation will be 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 noon at the Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dr. Dean Allen and the Rev. Carrol Caldwell. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fernwood Baptist Church, 200 Fernwood Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
