Wilma Goran

January 20, 1932 — April 30, 2010

Wilma Mast Haskin Goran, 78, of Skylyn Place, passed away in her sleep on April 30, 2010, at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Her parents were Norah Mast and Elizabeth Nisley Mast. She is survived by her husband, Frank Goran, and her two children, Tim and Harmony Haskins, all of Spartanburg. Born to an Amish family in Hutchinson, KS, on January 20, 1932, Wilma grew up on farms in the Midwest and in Virginia. Her love of learning led her to earn a degree in education from Eastern Mennonite College and a Master's degree from Ohio State University. It was at OSU that she met her first husband, a fellow Special Education teacher named Richard Haskins. They were married 12 years and had two children together. In 1977, her husband Richard passed, and she continued to raise her children alone while working as a Special Education teacher at Z. L. Madden Elementary. In 1989, she married Frank Goran, a retired widower who lived across the street. In 1993, she retired from teaching after sixteen years at Z. L. Madden. During her "retirement', she was a driver for Mobile Meals, a member of the American Association of University Women, a volunteer at Trinity United Methodist Church, an active member of the Pauline Mefford Circle and the John Nicholson Sunday School Class, as well as serving as Treasurer of the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher's Sorority. Wilma suffered a severe stroke in 2005 which left the right side of her body paralyzed and made it difficult for her to speak. Still, her determination and strength prevailed; three years of hard work in physical therapy saw her sufficiently rehabilitated to move back in with her husband Frank in an independent-living apartment at Skylyn Place. She continued to be an inspiration to everyone who knew her, family, friends, and caregivers alike. There will be a memorial service and reception at Trinity United Methodist Church at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5, 2010. Interment at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens will be private. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to either the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303; or to the National Stroke Association, 9707 East Easter Lane, Centennial, CO 80112 or www.stroke.org.
