William “Bill” Astor Blackwood, Jr., 81, of Moore, SC died Thursday, December 9, 2021 at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born July 9, 1940 in Spartanburg, SC, he was the only child of the late Geraldine Rose Sawyer and William Astor Blackwood, Sr. Bill is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 39 years, Mrs. Wanda Taylor Blackwood.
Bill loved to share stories about growing up in Spartanburg, whether it concerned Lone Oak Elementary, the Boy Scouts, the A&P grocery store, or Fairforest High School. His friendships and memories developed as part of the Fairforest High Class of 1958 brought great joy to him for over 60 years.
Bill graduated from Clemson College in 1962, earning a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. After Clemson, Bill served as a 1st Lieutenant in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, KY. Upon returning to the Upstate, he began a 56-year career as a consulting professional engineer. In 1973, Bill founded Blackwood Associates Inc., serving as president and principal engineer until his passing. He appreciated every opportunity to serve the Spartanburg community whether it was with friends at First Baptist Church, in the Lions Club, or on local boards and commissions. Bill shared a lifelong love of attending Clemson athletic events and discovering new restaurants with friends and family.
He is survived by his three sons, Trey Blackwood and his wife Mary of Spartanburg, SC, Bryan Blackwood and his wife Eleanor of Simpsonville, SC, Weston Blackwood and his wife Robin of Greenville, SC, and his four grandchildren, Will, Katie, Sam and Cole.
A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 PM Sunday, December 12, 2021, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Family will receive friends following the service at graveside.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Charles Lea Center Foundation (Spartanburg) or The Barbara Stone Foundation (Greenville)
