William Poole Smith, 98, of Clinton, SC and formerly of Spartanburg, SC, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at The Clinton Presbyterian Community. Born May 31, 1919 in Cayey, Puerto Rico, and raised in Glenn Springs, SC, he was a child of the late Dr. Albert Clifton Smith, Sr. and Emma White Freeman Smith. He was a retired veteran of World War II. He served in the Asiatic Pacific from September 1942 until March 1946 as a First Lieutenant in the First Signal Corp. Bill received a Purple Heart, as well as a Bronze Star Medal and Victory Medal, during his service in the Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Admiralty Islands. Bill received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy from the University of South Carolina in 1947. For several years Bill owned Smith's Park Hills Pharmacy in Spartanburg, SC. Bill was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg. Bill was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Billie Ann Theodore Smith; his brothers, Dr. Albert Clifton Smith, Jr. and Robert Lancaster Smith; his sister, Elizabeth Smith Butler; and his daughter-in-law, Sara Bryson Smith. Survivors include his son, William T. "Tedd" Smith; grandchildren, James "Jim" Smith and wife, Heather, of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Jessica Willard and husband, Jason, of Greenwood, SC, and Sharon Smith of New York, New York; and great-grandchildren, Andrew and Kennedy Smith and Keaton and Bryson Willard; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service, with military honors, will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, June 30, 2017, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. Joanne Hull. Visitation will follow at the graveside.
