William Joseph Michels, Jr.

William Joseph Michels Jr., 92, of Spartanburg, passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. He was born on November 18, 1932, in New York City, NY, a son of the late Betty Ceceli Kelly Michels and William Joseph Michels.

Bill was a proud graduate of Xavier High School and City College of New York. He retired as a senior accountant with Milliken and Company with over 30 years of service. After retiring from Milliken, Bill was part of the team that expanded Greenville Spartanburg Airport (GSP) leading the effort to generate bonds to extend runways for corporate expansion in the upstate.

A longtime member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Bill also was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6076. He was a faithful donor to the Spartanburg Blood Bank, was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, enjoyed model railroading and studying military history.

Surviving is his wife of over 66 years, Kathleen Patricia Fuller Michels; his children, William J. Michels III (Mary Jane), Margaret Ann Michels, Colonel U.S. Army (Retired) Rosemary Michels Carter, Captain U.S. Army (Veteran) Barbara Ann Michels (Vince Walker) and Katherine Ann Michels; and his granddaughter, Kathleen Patricia Carter (Aaron Martin). Bill was predeceased by his brother, Gerard W. Michels and is survived by his sister-in-law, Carol Michels.

The family will receive friends from 10:45-11:45 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 2025, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church Parish Center, 161 N. Dean Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302. A funeral mass follows at 12:00 pm in the Historic St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. David Whitman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School, 152 Alabama Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
