William Mcgurk

July 31, 1935 — October 7, 2021

William Raymond McGurk, 86, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 7, 2021.

He was the son of the late William and Elizabeth McGurk of Ironton, Ohio. Ray McGurk was born and raised in Kentucky, where he played basketball for Pikeville High School. Following his high school graduation, he obtained his associates degree in accounting and then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served six years from 1956 to 1962.

At the end of his active duty, Mr. McGurk returned to his hometown of Ironton. There he met the love of his life, Jean Adrienne McCown, to whom he was married for 55 years. They moved to Spartanburg, S.C., in 1968 and lived in the Woodland Heights neighborhood where they raised their four children.

Mr. McGurk began working for the S. S. Kresge Company in 1959 and managed stores in Silver Springs, Md., Raleigh, N.C., and Spartanburg, S.C. He remained with this company in Spartanburg for 36 years and retired shortly after helping open the former Super Kmart on Blackstock Road. During his retirement, he worked part-time in the benefits department at Denny’s Corporation.

Mr. McGurk was a member of Morningside Baptist Church, the American Legion Post  #28, and a Kentucky Colonel.

He is survived by his son, Jeff McGurk of Spartanburg; daughters, Debbie Atkins of Boiling Springs, S.C., Lisa Underhill (Stacy) of Taylors, S.C., and Jenny Fulton (Kent) of Edmond, Okla.; grandchildren, Rachel Parker of Wilmington, N.C., Adrienne Johnson (Ryan) of Ponca City, Okla., Stephanie Gilliland (Jonathan) of Cushing, Okla., and Nick Fulton of Ponca City, Okla.; seven great grandchildren and his sister Patsy Edwards of Maple Valley, Wash.

Mr. McGurk was predeceased by his beloved wife Jean, and brother James McGurk.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 3:45 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15, at Heritage Chapel Mausoleum at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens (1300 Fernwood Glendale Rd.) in Spartanburg. A Funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. at the Heritage Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Foundation, Heart Services Fund, P.O. Box 2624, Spartanburg, S.C. 29304 or to the donor’s favorite charity in memory of this wonderful husband and father.
