William H. "Bill" Luther, 89, of Spartanburg SC died August 8, 2016, at his home. Bill was born November 10, 1926, in Ashe County, NC, the son of the late William Theodore and Ola Lemly Luther, and the brother of Margaret L. Duncan of Boise, Idaho. Surviving is his wife, Doris B. Luther of 58 years, three children and their spouses: Rev. Deborah L. and Colonel Shawn Teagan, William H. "BJ" Luther Jr. and Dee Dee Mitchell and Ola L. and Charles Snow; four grandchildren, Nicole and Will Luther, Drew and Zach Snow, along with two great-grandchildren, Ryleigh and Easton. As a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, the Pacific Theatre, and a graduate of Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, Bill began his career with the City of Danville, VA Parks and Recreation department. In 1967, he became the Manager of the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. He continued his career and managed facilities in Greenville, SC, and Huntsville, AL, before moving to Norfolk, VA in 1988 as the Director of City Facilities. Bill became the Director of City Facilities for the City of Norfolk managing venues such as Scope Arena, Harrison Opera House, Chrysler Hall, and the Douglas MacArthur Memorial Museum. He was instrumental in the building of Harbor Park baseball facility and served as the Project Manager during its construction. Bill retired in 2000 and continued to consult until 2009 when he and his wife, Doris, retired to Spartanburg, South Carolina. Bill was a long-time member and a certified Facility Executive of the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM). He served in several leadership roles including the organization's Board of Directors, National President of the Association in 1979, and a Charles A. McElravy Award recipient in 1984. Bill was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, in Spartanburg and a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, August 21, 2016 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Spartanburg, South Carolina, conducted by the Rev. John Warren. The family will receive friends 2:00-2:45 PM the day of the service in the church sanctuary.
