Bill Hudnut was reunited with his wife of 63 years, Ruth, who left this earth on June 6, 2015 and has since been waiting for him at the Pearly Gates. He passed away at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home on Monday, January 2, 2017. Bill was born in Bondville, Illinois on April 30, 1928. He was the son of the late Harry Posey Hudnut and Eula May Berkshire. He was also preceded in death by his fraternal twin brother, Richard Dale Hudnut, and older sister, Ethel Ione Hyden. He is survived by a son, Daniel Hale (Mary) Hudnut and two daughters, Joanne Ellen (Richard) Mearns and Nancy Lynn (Timothy) Gergen. He has two grandchildren, Lisa Perdue and Lynn Yonker; and four great-grandchildren, Alex and Lucy Perdue, and Tyler and Hayden Yonker. Bill and his brother served in the U. S. Navy where Bill sang in the Navy Blue Jacket Choir. After the Navy, Bill began work as a mechanical engineer for Swift & Company. He was very handy with tools and could make or fix almost anything. He would help anyone and everyone that needed help. He took his mechanical engineering skills to R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company in Chicago. Bill enjoyed the outdoors and camping. He became a Boy Scout Leader, and was also a Sunday School Teacher at Ashburn United Methodist Church in Chicago. He enjoyed singing in the church choir there. Bill and his wife moved to Spartanburg in 1979 and he helped start-up the Engineering Department at the R. R. Donnelley plant there. After he retired from R. R. Donnelley, Bill worked as a maintenance man for St. Paul United Methodist Church where both he and his wife were members. He sang in the Chancel Choir at St. Paul for 32 years. After a few years as the church maintenance man, he worked for Irwin Ace Hardware in Spartanburg before finally hanging up his tool belt. He was an avid Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs fan. Sadly, Alzheimer's disease robbed him of the joy of watching his Cubs win the 2016 World Series. Bill and Ruth enjoyed camping and traveled with their children on vacations all across the United States. When it was all tallied up, they had camped in 42 of the 50 states. In 1992 they set out to make it 43. They drove from Spartanburg to Alaska pulling a pop-up camper not once, but three separate times. The first was in 1992 and then they repeated this feat in 1996 and again in 2000.
