William Howell, Jr.

William Walker Howell, Jr., 72, of 1022 Four Mile Branch Road, died Thursday, January 7, 2010. Born October 20, 1937, in Athens, GA, he was the son of the late William Walker Howell, Sr. and Julia Bradwell Howell. He was the husband of Rebecca Carr Clayton Howell and was first married to the late Carolyn Sears Howell. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia, and after graduation he served as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard. Mr. Howell was retired from Milliken and Company after 44 years of service. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg where he served as an Elder and Deacon. He was associated with many events and activities of the Spartanburg Regional Foundation, including serving as a Trustee of the Regional Hospice Board. Mr. Howell was a man of high integrity, a generous giver, devoted to his family, an avid cook, and actively involved in the missions ministry of his Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons, William Walker Howell, III and wife Pamela of Asheville, NC, Todd Sears Howell and wife Leigh of Knoxville, TN, Mark McBride Howell and wife Nieves of Atlanta, GA, and Frederic John Howell of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; two daughters, Nancy Clayton Fleischer and husband Paul of Asheville, NC, and Margaret Clayton Ellis and husband Robert of Lockhart, SC; a brother, Dowse Bradwell Howell and wife Carolyn of Athens, GA; and eleven grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 11, 2010, at Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens, GA. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg conducted by the Rev. Dr. David W. Renwick. The family will receive friends following the memorial service in Fogartie Hall at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Missions Fund, 393 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302; or to the SRMC Hospice Special Needs Fund, 120 Heywood Avenue, Suite 300, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
