William Cureton

August 24, 1922 — August 9, 2017

William McDow "Mac" Cureton passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 9, 2017. Born in Decatur, GA in August of 1922, he grew up in Union, SC, a town he loved dearly. He graduated from Union High School in 1941. During WWII, he served as a B-29 bombardier in the Army Air Corps. After the war, Mac graduated from Clemson in 1949, excelling in the study of Architecture and in athletics, lettering two years in track as well as playing football on the C team. In August of 1949, he married the love of his life, June Cannon. In 2011, she preceded him in death. Mac retired from Lockwood-Greene. He was AIA registered and qualified for NCARB, which allowed him to be registered as an architect in any state. His many architectural contributions can be seen throughout Spartanburg, testaments to his talents. Well into his nineties, he continued to work on many projects, including designing and building furniture, as well as carving Arabian horses from wood. Mac was a faithful member of Bethel United Methodist for 68 years, a member of the H. F. Chreitzberg Class. He especially enjoyed his time on the trustees committee, during which time he and Floyd Chapman made many improvements in the church with their combined skills of designing and wood working. Mac is survived by a daughter, Nancy Ogletree (Ron) of Spartanburg; a son, Dick Cureton (Laura) of Houston, TX; one granddaughter, Kelly Ogletree Turner (Kevin) of Spartanburg; three grandsons, Spencer (Catherine), Michael, and Kyle (Cara) Cureton of Texas; and four great-grandsons, Jacob, Cameron, and Zachary Turner of Spartanburg and Asa Cureton of Texas; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by an infant daughter, infant grandson, his siblings Betty, Buck, Frank, and Tommy Cureton. Mac's family is exceedingly grateful for the many beloved former Lockwood-Greene colleagues, the Bethel visiting teams, and friends who actively remained in contact with Mac up until his passing. Rusty Bethea, a former caregiver, remained especially attentive to Mac, with whom he had established a special friendship. The dedicated staff, caregivers, and nurses at Eden Terrace made his last sixteen months active, comfortable, and pleasant. Visitation will be held 6:00 to 8:00 pm Friday, August 11, 2017, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be held the following day, Saturday, August 12, 2017, at 2:00 pm at Bethel United Methodist Church, Spartanburg, conducted by Reverend David Nichols. Honorary pallbearers will be Ted Petoskey, John Surratt, Phil Dickens, John Evans, Jim Curry, and Tim Hendrick, as well as members of the H. F. Chreitzberg Sunday School Class.
