William Kent Chidester

Spartanburg, South Carolina

William Kent Chidester, age 79, a loving husband, father, and uncle who cherished life, passed away on September 24, 2023, in Spartanburg, SC. He was born on February 24, 1944, in Grafton, WV to the late, George Chidester and Bonnie Sue Nine Chidester.

William's commitment to public service and education shaped his remarkable career. He graduated from Keyser High School, attended Fairmont State College and continued his studies at Converse College followed by dedicating time to the Peace Corps. He then pursued his passion by becoming an educator at various institutions. William worked as a teacher and a WVU 4H Extension Agent in Mineral County. He later served as the Assistant Executive Director of the Charles Lea Center Adult Program. He also provided guidance and support to students as an Academic Advisor and Instructor at Spartanburg Community College.

William's thirst for knowledge was evident through his educational journey. 

An avid reader with a love for literature, he enriched his mind with diverse perspectives. In the kitchen, William showcased his culinary skills as a family chef. He also possessed an incredible ability to connect with others effortlessly while staying knowledgeable about national and local politics.

William leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Kay; daughter, Gwen Chidester; son Michael Chidester; sisters Debbie Noonan of Lahmansville, WV;  cousins Bobbi Lee Lavelle of Medina,WV, Penny Ashenfelter Sanders of Keyser, WV, Larry (Karol) Ashenfelter of Keyser, WV; niece Megan Teeter; along with numerous nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart. William is predeceased by his parents and sisters, Vicki Crow and Cathy Sultzer.

Throughout his life journey, he touched the lives of many with his kindness, passion for education, and dedication to public service. His warm presence, unwavering love for his family, and ability to connect with people will be deeply missed. 

In memory, donations may be made to the Spartanburg Community College Foundation; Spartanburg County Humane Society, Spartanburg County Public Library - Audio Visual Department or Favor Spartanburg.


The family will announce a celebration of life gathering at a later date.
