Boiling Springs

Wayne Lee Tate, 79, of Boiling Springs is now in the presence of his Lord, Jesus Christ. Born in Spartanburg to the late Boyd Lee Tate and Mamie Gertrude Flynn Tate, he has made the upstate his home for the past 52 years. He will always remain in the hearts of his children, grandchildren, and extended family.

Wayne was a long-time devoted member of First Baptist North Spartanburg Church and served in many capacities there over the years. Throughout his lifetime, he received a degree from Bowman Technical School in watchmaking, clockmaking, and jewelry repair; became a wonderful father; and was co-owner of Tate Jewelers (with wife, Gail) for over 40 years. Mr. Tate was also very active in the Boiling Springs Band Boosters/Concessions, a highly respected troop master and board member in the Boy Scouts, and a necessary contributor to the Greer area with his one-of-a-kind workmanship at Tate Jewelers. Wayne will always be remembered for his hard work, which showed in his love of gardening, woodworking and tools, and his heart of giving to others.

Wayne was predeceased by his devoted wife of 54 years, Gail; sisters, Carolyn Hill and Molly Jean Lewis; and brother, Jesse Tate. He is survived by his children, Katrina Murphree Garrett (Ryan), David Tate (Shannon), and Mary Elizabeth Bergstrom (Tim). His grandchildren are Connor, Cinnamon, and Caellum Murphree; Maxwell and Samuel Tate; and Sullivan, Duncan, and Elliott Bergstrom. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces.

The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:15 a.m., Thursday, July 18, 2024, at First North, 8740 Asheville Hwy, Spartanburg, SC 29316. Funeral service will follow at 11:30 a.m., in the church sanctuary, conducted by the Rev. David Tate and Dr. Michael Hamlet. 

Interment will be 12:00 p.m., Friday, July 19, 2024, at Boiling Springs Memorial Gardens, 4081 Hwy. 9, Boiling Springs, SC 29316.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gentiva Hospice, 101 N. Pine St #215, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
