Wayne Huff, Sr.

Wayne Livingston Huff, Sr., of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, June 10, 2013, at Spring Arbor West in Hendersonville, NC, following a period of declining heath. Born November 3, 1913, in Sioux City, IA, he was the son of the late William Henry and Metta Emma Tyler Huff. He was the husband, for nearly 67 years, of the late Mary Margaret Cecil Huff. Mr. Huff graduated from East High School and Morningside College in Sioux City, IA. He did graduate work at the University of Chicago until he was drafted into Infantry at Camp Croft. He entered OCS at Ft. Benning, GA, and was sent to Adj. Gen. School, Ft. Washington, MD. He served in the Air Force for four years and retired as Major. He was the manager and owner of Cecil's Business College and a teacher-counselor for 15 years in School District #2. A member of First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg, he was also a Sunday School teacher and Deacon Emeritus. Surviving are his children, Mrs. Metta Jean (Victor) Luttmann of Hendersonville, NC, and Wayne (Patricia) Huff of Daufuskie Island, SC; three granddaughters, Mrs. Gretchen (Bradley) Smith of Greenville, SC, Mrs. Megan (Greg McGann) Huff of Philadelphia, PA, and Mrs. Tyler (Sebastian) Gaviria of Raleigh, NC; three great-granddaughters, Caroline Smith, Carlie Smith, and Reagan Smith; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by his siblings Mrs. Helen (Clarence) Hemphill of Atlantic, IA, Mr. Steve (Melba) Huff of Seattle, WA, Mr. William (Evelyn) Huff of Park Rapids, MN, and Mr. Roland (Dorothy) Huff of Kalamazoo, MI. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, June 13, 2013, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC, 29307, with the Rev. Steve Jones, of Four Seasons Hospice in Hendersonville, NC, officiating. Special music will be presented by Mrs. Lara McKinnis. A visitation and reception will follow at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Four Seasons Compassion for Life, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731. The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude and appreciation to the past and present staff of White Oak Estates Assisted Living in Spartanburg for their loving kindness and caring of Margaret and Wayne while living there for eight years. In addition, the family wishes to express sincere appreciation and gratitude to the past and current staff and residents and family members of Spring Arbor West, and Four Seasons Hospice staff and volunteers, who showed tender loving care for Wayne in Hendersonville, NC, these last three years of his life.
