Walter Smith

Walter "Billy" Smith, 80, of Spartanburg, died Sunday, November 20, 2011, at Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care. Born June 16, 1931, in Pacolet Mills, he was the son of the late Walter R. and Lula Garner Smith. Billy retired from the Army National Guard. He was a member of Brown's Chapel Baptist Church of Pacolet Mills. Survivors include his sons, Tommy (Myra) Smith and Ricky Lee Smith of Pacolet; twenty-two grandchildren; brothers, Ned (Audrey) Smith and Olin (Evie) Smith of Pacolet; stepdaughters, Pat Brungart and Wendey Taylor, both of Spartanburg; stepson, Andy Martin of Easley; and his caretaker, Edith Medlin. He was predeceased by a son, Billy Wayne Smith; and brothers, William Paul, Clarence Robert, John Earl, and James Franklin Smith. Visitation will be 1:00-2:15 PM Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at Brown's Chapel Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow 2:30 PM, in the church, conducted by the Rev. Ralph Jett and the Rev. Andrew Carrigan. Burial will be in Pacolet Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Morning Star Baptist Church Mission Fund, 150 Old Spartanburg Rd., Pacolet, SC 29372; or Brown's Chapel Baptist Church Mission Fund, PO Box 396, Pacolet Mills, SC 29373.
