Walter Mason

Walter Benjamin Mason, 79, of Spartanburg, died Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at his home. Born April 17, 1930, in Startex, SC, he was the son of the late Benjamin F. and Leila Dobbins Mason and the husband of 58 years to the late Ophelia Fisher Mason. A 1947 graduate of WLT High School, he was retired from Belk Hudson Stores after more than forty years of service, with the last twenty years as manager at the Leader Department Store. He was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church and the Goodwill Sunday School Class and was a U.S. Army Veteran during the Korean War. Survivors include a son, Joseph Barry Mason and his wife Cathy T. Mason of Spartanburg; two granddaughters, Elizabeth M. Fields and her husband Jeffrey G. Fields, and Sarah M. Mason, all of Spartanburg; four grandsons, W. Benjamin Mason, III of Columbia, Joseph B. Mason, Jr., Matthew T. Mason, and David F. Mason, all of Spartanburg; a great-grandson, Charles Bolen Fields; and a brother, John Wallace Mason of Huntsville, AL. He was predeceased by a son, W. Benjamin Mason, Jr.; two sisters, Elsie Mason Johnson and Lois Mason Bartu; and four brothers, Troy, Olin, Will, and Cecil E. Mason. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Saturday, January 16, 2010, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 17, 2010, at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Kermit Morris and the Rev. Joe Dempsey. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fairforest Baptist Church, P. O. Box 338, Fairforest, SC 29336. The family is at the home of his son, J.
