Walter Johnson

Walter Hampton Johnson, 77, of Spartanburg, died Saturday, October 1, 2011 at his home. Born September 11, 1934 in Cross Anchor, he was the son of the late Lude and Claudia Morris Johnson. He was retired from Yellow Freight Trucking Company, a member and Deacon of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, a past Master of St. John Lodge #333 and Cherokee Lodge #135, past District Deputy and 33rd Degree Mason. He was a member of both the Scottish and York Rite, where he served as secretary/recorder for the York Rite Masonic bodies for many years. He was a Navy Veteran serving during the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Easler Johnson; daughter, Amanda Whitaker and husband Tim of Cowpens; son-in-law, Gerry Rhodes of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Jeremy Rhodes of Atlanta, GA, Joshua Rhodes, Augusta, GA, Sydney and Brooke Whitaker both of Cowpens, and two sisters, Marcelene Hughes of Cross Anchor and Barbara Winchester of Campobello. He was predeceased by a daughter, Tina Rhodes and a sister, Vivian Cline. Masonic Rites will be held at 6:00 PM Monday, October 3, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel with visitation following. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Charlie Glover and Rev. Fred Quidley. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery. The family is at the home, 1875 Dewberry Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
