Walter "Walt" Lafayette Hopkins III, 79, of Spartanburg, SC, died Wednesday, February 17, 2016, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born March 16, 1936, in Kingsport, TN, he was the son of the late Walter Lafayette Hopkins Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Beeks Hopkins. A veteran of the U. S. Navy Reserves, Mr. Hopkins was a member of the Jaycees in the 1960's in Greenville, SC and a member of the Sertoma Club while residing in Florida. Walt was a graduate of Greenville High School. He was a lifetime member of the Breakfast Optimist Club of Spartanburg where he served as vice president and received several awards including the Pete Smith Award for Outstanding and Unselfish Contributions to the Community, Friend of Youth Award, and Outstanding Leadership and Teaching Youth to Enjoy Life by Fishing Award. He also chaired the Optimist Christmas tree lot for five years. Survivors include his beloved wife of 57 years, Alice Claire Miller Hopkins of the home; sons, W. L. "Terry" Hopkins IV (Susan) and J. Scott Hopkins, all of Spartanburg, SC, and Dana L. Hopkins (Jan) of Columbia, SC; sister, Jan Hopkins Smith of Greenville, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life service honoring his memory will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday February 21, 2016, at Trinity United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Neal Woods and the Rev. Mickey Fisher. Visitation will follow the service in the church Fellowship Hall. Honorary escort will be members of the Breakfast Optimist Club.
