Walter Harvey Hendley III, 75, of Spartanburg SC, died Monday evening, July 12, 2021 at the Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care after a brief illness. Born August 31, 1945, he was the only son of Walter Harvey Hendley, Jr. and Ruth Foster Hendley, both longtime residents of Spartanburg. His mother was a teacher and violinist who played first chair in the Spartanburg Symphony Orchestra. His father was a traffic engineer with Taylor Colquitt in Spartanburg.
Harvey, as his family called him, attended Spartanburg city schools. He graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1963, then later from Wofford College in 1967. After college, Harvey joined the U.S. Army and served as a lieutenant at Camp Casey in South Korea. Following his military service, Harvey worked for the Boy Scouts of America, then returned to Spartanburg where he worked as an accountant until retirement.
A charter member of Fernwood Baptist Church, Harvey followed both his father and his grandmother, Iva May Hendley, as a Sunday school teacher. He was a proud member of the Lions Club, with their many service projects, and was a lifelong history buff.
