Virginia Sue McMillin McCown, died Friday, October 23, 2015 at Eden Terrace, Spartanburg. Virginia, the loving middle child of Curtis Clark and Leola Brannon McMillin, was born May 23, 1918. She graduated from Spartanburg High School at the age of fifteen and earned a Magna Cum Laude Bachelor of Arts degree from Converse College in 1937. While in college, she met her late husband, Crayton McCown of Darlington, SC. Throughout her life, she lived in the northern Spartanburg County area known as McMillin. She took pride and pleasure in being a member of the seventh generation of her family to reside there. Virginia possessed a mind both brilliant and wise, a keen intellectual curiosity, a profound consideration for others, a zest for travel, and the ability to inspire young people in the classroom and as a counselor. Her years of work in education culminated at McCracken Junior High School. She was a gentle, effective leader who served as president of the Rutledge Book Club, of Delta Kappa Gamma, and of PEO Chapter D. She also filled many leadership positions in the First Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg. However, her greatest legacy was her commitment to her family as daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and aunt. She was a concerned citizen, a faithful friend, and the epitome of grace and strength. Her children are Crayton McCown, Jr. (Marilyn), Ginny M. Fleming and Lee M. Huey. She leaves eight grandchildren, Frank Huey, Jr., Eleanor Huey, Colleen Fleming Newland (Max), C.C. McCown, Sarah McCown, Steve Fleming (Karen), David Fleming (Karen) and Michael Fleming (Heather) and five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her siblings, Curtis Clark, Jr., James Paul, John Horace, and Mary Lucile. Services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church, 393 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307, conducted by the Rev. JoAnne Hull. A reception will follow at 12:00 - 2:00 PM at the Piedmont Club, 361 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
