Vernon Stokely

Vernon Moore Stokely, 91, of Spartanburg, SC, died Friday, March 15, 2013, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born March 24, 1921, in Crawford, GA, he was the son of the late Ernest M. "Doc" and Nonye Maxwell Stokely. He was a devoted husband for 68 years to the late Frances Blackwell Stokely. He attended Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, GA, and then transferred to the University of Georgia where he was a member of the ROTC, received his Business Administration Degree in 1942, and remained an avid Bulldog fan. A World War II veteran of the U. S. Army Air Force, he served in the 8th Air Force 7th Photo Reconnaissance Unit in England. Mr. Stokely was retired from Rockwell International Draper Division. He was also a member of Fernwood Baptist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He loved sports and was an avid golfer, bowler, and softball player. He remained a passionate sports fan his entire life. Surviving are his daughter, Susan Stokely of Spartanburg; son, Jere Stokely and his wife Donna of Roswell, GA; three grandsons, Jamie Daniel and his wife Crystal of Chesnee, SC, Chris Daniel of Aiken, SC, and John Stokely of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter, Rachel Stokely Horkan and her husband Will of Gray, GA; seven great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Ernestine Stokely Hansford and Eunice Stokely Blanchard, and brother, Maxwell Arnold Stokely. Receiving of friends will begin at 2:00 PM Monday, March 18, 2013, at Fernwood Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM, at the church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Dean Allen and the Rev. Dr. Lisa Wimberly Allen. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fernwood Baptist Church, 200 Fernwood Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
