Vernon Rowland

Vernon L. Rowland, 93, of Spartanburg, SC, died Friday, March 19, 2021 at his home. Born August 16, 1927, in Ware Shoals, SC, he was the son of the late Robert Heywood Rowland and Louise Martin Rowland Simonton. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Betty Jane Glenn Rowland and his daughter, Jane Elizabeth Rowland. A graduate of Greenville High School, Mr. Rowland attended Furman University and owned numerous businesses in Spartanburg including Rowland Automotive and Rowland Radiator. He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church, the Royal Sunday School Class and formerly served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and chairman of the Grounds Committee. He was an Eagle Scout and a charter member of the Breakfast Optimist Club. Survivors include his son Greg (Linda Najera) of Spartanburg who, along with his wife, served as Mr. Rowland's primary caregiver over the past year. Other survivors include two additional children, Glenn Rowland (Margie) of Anderson, SC and LeAnne Rowland (David Sumrall) of Lebanon, TN; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; sister, Bobbie Schwiers of Pelzer, SC; feline companions, Lucy and Lil'Bit. Mr. Rowland's son, Greg, would like to extend a sincere thank you to Mr. Rowland's many friends who visited his Dad in recent weeks. Of special importance are John Heiting and Robin Fuller for their enduring friendship and care for Mr. Rowland. Visiting Angels and Pruitt Health Hospice provided unbelievable compassionate care for Mr. Rowland in his final months, weeks, and days. Private burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC. A memorial service will be held at Morningside Baptist Church at a later date.
