Venie Poteat McCarter, 97, of 406 Flatwood Road, died Saturday, March 6, 2010, at her home. Born February 22, 1913, in Spartanburg County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Zeb Vance and Nan Kimbrell Poteat and wife of the late Warren Debbs McCarter. She spent her life loving Jesus, her family, and friends. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. Venie was a precious loving Mother and is survived by four daughters, E. Carolyn Horton, Joyce E. McGill and husband Joe, Martha J. Fortner and husband Jack, Miriam B. Morgan and husband Jim, all of Spartanburg; a son, Joe Wayne McCarter and wife Ozelle of Spartanburg; a daughter-in-law, Karen McCarter of Spartanburg; a sister, Nan Charles of Spartanburg: two half-brothers, Norfleet Poteat and Talmadge Poteat, both of Spartanburg; twenty-one grandchildren, June Price (Glen), Joan Droter (Eddie), Jeri Byars (Steve), Jean Ruppe, Rocky McGill (Cindy), Rex McGill (predeceased Nicole), Rodney McGill (Gina), Terri Post (Tom), Jason McCarter (Shannon), Jackie Fortner (Meredith), Mark Fortner (Dawn), Luke Fortner (Allison), John Fortner (Lisa), Harriette Lowe (Jimmy), Kim Bridges, Kelly Wiggins (Nathan), Roger McCarter, Jr., Steven McCarter, Carrie Greer (Glen), Lori Green (Travis), and Daniel McCarter (Lauren); forty great-grandchildren; and one great-great- granddaughter. She was predeceased by a son, Roger Warren McCarter, Sr.; two sons-in law, Lewis A. Horton and Nathan E. Bridges; nine brothers and sisters; two granddaughters, Martha Ann Fortner and infant Rhonda Joyce McGill: and one infant great-grandson. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2010, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Charles Hall, the Rev. John Fortner, and the Rev. Ty Childers. Burial will be in Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family is at the home.
