Velma Louise Blalock Cartee Wood, 95, passed away Sunday evening, November 21, 2010 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. A native of Spartanburg County, she was born May 4, 1915. Mrs Wood was the widow of William L. "Bill" Wood and the daughter of the late Oscar and Ollie Barnham Blalock. Mrs. Wood is survived by her daughter, Judy Caton and her husband, Joe of Moore; her sons, Joe L. Cartee and his wife Sandra of Spartanburg, and Farrell Cartee and his wife, Velma of Moore; her twelve grandchildren, Joe, Jeff, Jon and Jay Caton, Cindy Cartee, Joe Cartee, II, Chris Cartee, Lori Gurr, Rita Cartee, Dena Goucher, Ricky Cartee and Kenny Cartee; 19 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, George Raymond Cartee; her daughter, Maize Louise Cartee; her son, Richard R. Cartee; and by 6 brothers and 5 sisters. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and last attended Poplar Springs Baptist Church. Mrs. Wood was an employee of Butte Knit and retired in 1977. She took great pride in her family, her home, and flowers. She was a self educated gardener and was recognized by her Royal Oak Town Home neighbors in June of 2008 with the Yard of the Month award. A cryptside service will be held 2:00 PM on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Complex, conducted by the Rev. Robert Bevill. The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 PM at the Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be grandsons and a great nephew, Joe Caton, Jeff Caton, Jon Caton, Jay Caton, Joe Cartee, II, Chris Cartee, Colby Caton, and Donnie Ballenger. The family expresses sincere thanks to Donna Kind, Elaine Wood, Alton Free and Ashlan Village caregivers. Also Tibb, Brent, Deb, Dara and the many caregivers and residents at Magnolia Manor in Inman who befriended our Mom and watched after her as she walked and explored the entire facility, sweeping and helping the nurses with their paper work.
