Thomas Phillips

Thomas A. Phillips, 69, longtime Spartanburg attorney, died on Thursday, September 22, 2016, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home following a courageous battle with cancer. Born May 5, 1947, in Royston, GA, he was the son of the late Rev. and Mrs. W. Thomas Phillips, Jr. Thomas was a graduate of Cowpens High School. He then graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B. A. Degree in English in 1969. Following graduation, he served in the South Carolina National Guard. Afterward he returned to the University of South Carolina and received a Juris Doctor Degree in 1973. He practiced law with the firm of Butler, Means, Evins, & Browne for 43 years. Surviving are his wife, Amy Webster; daughter, Paige Phillips Eckles, her husband, Austin, and their children, Thomas and Lillian. He is also survived by his sister, Martha P. Thomason; brother, James "Jimmy" A. Phillips, his former wife, Linda L. Phillips; and niece, Caroline Rogers, her husband, Duane, and their children, Abigail and Griffin. Visitation will be 9:30-10:45 AM Monday, September 26, 2016, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM, at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Amos Workman. Private burial will follow the service. Honorary escort will be members of the Spartanburg County Bar Association.
