Thomas A. Phillips, 69, longtime Spartanburg attorney, died on Thursday, September 22, 2016, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home following a courageous battle with cancer. Born May 5, 1947, in Royston, GA, he was the son of the late Rev. and Mrs. W. Thomas Phillips, Jr. Thomas was a graduate of Cowpens High School. He then graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B. A. Degree in English in 1969. Following graduation, he served in the South Carolina National Guard. Afterward he returned to the University of South Carolina and received a Juris Doctor Degree in 1973. He practiced law with the firm of Butler, Means, Evins, & Browne for 43 years. Surviving are his wife, Amy Webster; daughter, Paige Phillips Eckles, her husband, Austin, and their children, Thomas and Lillian. He is also survived by his sister, Martha P. Thomason; brother, James "Jimmy" A. Phillips, his former wife, Linda L. Phillips; and niece, Caroline Rogers, her husband, Duane, and their children, Abigail and Griffin. Visitation will be 9:30-10:45 AM Monday, September 26, 2016, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM, at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Amos Workman. Private burial will follow the service. Honorary escort will be members of the Spartanburg County Bar Association. In remembrance of Thomas, memorials may be made to the Cancer Association of Spartanburg & Cherokee Counties, PO Box 1582, Spartanburg, SC 29304; or Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
