Thomas Bartram, Jr.

Thomas Walsh Bartram, Jr., 86, of Spartanburg, died Tuesday, November 22, 2011, at his home. Born August 31, 1925, in Charleston, WV, he was the son of the late Thomas Walsh Bartram, Sr. and Mildred Shelling Bartram. Mr. Bartram was a graduate of Mt. Hermon School, Bucknell University, and the University of Virginia School of Law. He served in World War II and the Korean War as Captain, United States Marine Corps. He was Director of Personnel and Administration, Universal Oil Products Co., Chicago, IL. In retirement to Spartanburg he became active in environmental and horticulture organizations. He served as president, and longtime bulletin editor and Director Emeritus of the Men's Garden Club, Board of Directors of Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve, Board of Directors of SPACE, and former chairman of Keep Spartanburg Clean. In addition, he was a former member of Executive Sertoma Club and a member of the Men's Bible Class at First Presbyterian Church. He was predeceased by his first wife, Carole Fox Bartram; and son, Roger W. Bartram. Survivors include his wife, Marianne Ellison Bartram; son, Dr. Scott F. (Susan) Bartram of McLean, VA; sister, Nancy Bartram (Norman) Beecher of Concord, MA; daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Bartram of Louisville, KY; stepchildren, Alicia Carwile (Frank) Parra of Charlotte, NC and William (Marian) Carwile of Anderson, SC; grandchildren, Jeanne Bartram (Chris) Ward, Gregory Bartram, Hanna Bartram; step-grandchildren, Lauren Carwile (Drew) Clark and Julianne Carwile. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, November 26, 2011, at First Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Dr. William L. Arthur. Visitation will follow in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Thomas W. Bartram Honorarium Endowment Fund for the Bartram Trail at Hatcher Gardens, c/o Spartanburg County Foundation, 424 East Kennedy Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
