The Rev. W. Waller Caldwell III, an Episcopal priest with a passion for teaching and serving others, died suddenly at his home early Friday, October 7, 2011. He was 48 years of age. Waller was born in Knoxville, TN on July 10, 1963, and grew up in Allen, TX where he graduated high school. He received his undergraduate degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX and went on to receive his Masters of Divinity at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL. Upon graduation from seminary, Waller was ordained to the Deaconate at St. Matthew's Cathedral in Dallas, TX and the following year, 1992, was ordained to the Priesthood in the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest, IL, where he humbly served as an associate priest. Waller was known for his compassion as a priest and a teacher. He formerly taught science at Lake Forest Middle School and most recently taught eighth grade science at Carver Middle School in Spartanburg, SC. He also diligently worked as the assistant Rector of Pastoral care and Missioner at the Church of the Advent in Spartanburg, where he embraced those who were in need of touch by God's workers. Waller was a loving father to his daughter Joyce of Lake Bluff, IL, who brought continued happiness to his heart. He is also survived by his parents, Connie and W. Waller Caldwell, Jr.; his brother John and sister-in-law Ann Marie and their children John-John, Rebecca and Michael; his sister Christiann (Christi) and her children Al Jr., Abigail and Anna-Kate, all of Spartanburg, SC; his aunt and uncle, Caroline and Richard Phelan of Salem, VA; and many other extended family members and friends. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held Sunday October 9, 2011, at 4:00PM at The Episcopal Church of the Advent in Spartanburg. Officiating will be The Right Reverend W. Andrew Waldo, Bishop of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina, and the Reverend J. Edward Morris. Entombment will follow in the Bell Tower Columbarium. The family will receive friends following the service at the Parish and Community Life Center.
