Ted Phelps

Ted M. Phelps, 67, of Spartanburg, died Sunday, December 23, 2012, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Mr. Phelps was born January 13, 1945 in Landrum, SC and was reared in the Whitney Community, a son of the late Alfred M. and Annie Bell Webb Phelps. A loyal member of Fairview Free Will Baptist Church where he loved listening to the choir sing, he also loved spending time with his children and family. He was a 1964 graduate of Spartanburg High School, was the Most Valuable Player in the 1964 Shrine Bowl Game, and was a 1968 graduate of Wofford College, where he was an All-American football player. Mr. Phelps retired after 30 years of service as a teacher and coach at Carver Junior High School in Spartanburg School District 7. He is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Elizabeth Higginbotham Phelps; his son, Teddy M. Phelps, Jr. and his wife, Cory, of Spartanburg; his daughters, Stephanie Phelps of Myrtle Beach, SC and Alisa Phelps of Spartanburg; his grandchildren, Kaleb, Abraham and Jessie Anne Phelps, Kaya Chestnut, Margo and Lukas McGaha; his brothers, George Sawyer of California and Eddie Phelps of Spartanburg; his sisters, Barbara Tilley of California and Judy Brown of Spartanburg; and his loyal canine, "Pergo". He was predeceased by a sister, Vickie Phelps. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 27, 2012 at Fairview Free Will Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tim Hackett. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. The family will be at their respective homes. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorial may be made to Fairview Free Will Baptist Church, 2058 Chesnee Highway, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
