Sybil Stewart

July 12, 1927 — March 11, 2017

Sybil Creighton Stewart, 89 of Spartanburg, SC is now with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ after passing from this world on Saturday, March 11, 2017. Born July 12, 1927 in Charlotte, NC, she was the daughter of the late David R. Creighton and Grace Ladson Creighton. Mrs. Stewart moved to Spartanburg in 1942. She was a graduate of Spartanburg High School Class of 1944 and Converse College Class of 1948. Upon graduating from Converse College, she taught math at her alma mater, Spartanburg High School. She married William Grady Stewart in 1949. Mrs. Stewart joined First Baptist Church of Spartanburg in 1942. One of her greatest joys was singing in the sanctuary choir. She was a devoted choir member for over 60 years. Church visitation outreach was extremely important to her and she was active in this role for over 35 years. Mrs. Stewart served on the Music, Benevolent, and Committee on Committees at First Baptist. She was a Youth Training Union leader for over 10 years and was active with the Girls Auxiliary. She was a member of the Women's Missionary Union and the Bonita White Circle. Each Sunday, she looked forward to being present in Pat Wilson's Sunday School Class. In the Spartanburg community, Mrs. Stewart was a charter member of the Cema Chreitzberg Garden Club, Georgia Cleveland Home Board, Spartanburg Debutante Club Board, and Spartanburg Heart Services Board. She was very active in the PTA of Pine Street School, Evans Junior High School, and Spartanburg High School while her children were students. In the late 1960's, she was also a member of the founding board of directors of Young Life Spartanburg. For years, she organized the reunions for the Spartanburg High School Class of 1944. This class donated more funds for scholarships for Spartanburg High School seniors than any class in the history of the school. Survivors include her loving husband of 68 years, William Grady Stewart, her children, Dr. William David Stewart (Patti) of Spartanburg, and Fair Stewart Brocard (John) of Marietta, GA. Her grandchildren brought so much love and happiness to her life. They are Kristen Stewart Turner (Sam) of Winston-Salem, NC, Creighton Stewart Hartanov (Justin) of Chicago, IL, Dr. William Bozeman Stewart (Amanda) of San Antonio, TX, Ashley Fair Brocard of Orlando, FL, John Stewart Brocard (Gretchen) of Marietta, GA, and James Grady Brocard (Elizabeth) of Marietta, GA. Mrs. Stewart's great-grandchildren are Hannah Kate Turner, Caroline Stewart Turner, Aniston Lake Hartanov, and Quentin Beck Culberson. The highlight of every year was a summer beach trip with the entire family. Mrs. Stewart was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her prayer life supported all of her family throughout their life journeys. Whenever a friend was in need, she never failed to visit, provide a kind word, or prepare a meal. No matter the difficulties encountered with cancer in her later years, she always put the feelings of others above those of herself. She was one of the most loving, humble, and caring individuals one could ever know. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 18, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, 250 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, directed by the Rev.
