Stuart Gethin Jones, 70, of Dataw Island, SC, went to heaven on Sunday, January 5, 2014, at Medical University of South Carolina-Charleston. Born May 20, 1943, in Richmond Burrough, Staten Island, NY, he was the son of the late Gethin Leonard and Irene Robb Jones. A member of the varsity football team and graduate of Curtis High School in Staten Island, NY, Mr. Jones was also active in scouting, attaining the honorable rank of Eagle Scout. He worked for eight years for the United States Postal Service in New York before moving to Spartanburg, SC in 1972. He was employed with McLean Trucking for 13 years and Yellow Freight in Charlotte, NC for 12 years, retiring in 1998 as a member of Teamster Local 71. Mr. Jones was a devoted husband of 49 years, as well as a wonderful father and dedicated PopPop to his grandchildren. He enjoyed working out at the gym six days a week, scuba diving, visiting National Civil War parks, ocean cruises, jazz music, gardening, and sharing his produce with family, friends, and neighbors. He was an avid reader and a scholar on the Civil War, WWI, and WWII. He volunteered with the Beaufort Art Association as well as other community, civic, and church events, and was a die-hard NY Giants and NY Rangers fan. He and his wife, Jacqueline moved from the Upstate of SC to the Low Country of Beaufort County in 2004. Mr. Jones was a member of Dataw Island Club, Friends of Hunting Island, and St. Peter's Catholic Church where he served as an usher. He never met a stranger and leaves behind many close friends. Byrnes Jones; daughter, Irene Margaret Jones Barton (Steve) of Marietta, GA; granddaughter, Casey Lane Barton; grandson, Alexander James Barton; brother, Ronald L. Jones (Roseann) of Matawan, NJ; mother-in-law, Margaret Rose Byrnes of Spartanburg, SC; sisters-in-law, Kathleen M. Bryzgornia (John) of Long Island, NY, Mary J. Clark (Thomas) of Wellford, SC, Diane M. Willard (Reggie) of Chesnee, SC, Dorothy A. Caggiano (Alfred) of Granger, IN, and Elizabeth J. Gray (Glen) of Alpharetta, GA; brother-in-law, John P Byrnes, Jr. (Kay) of Spartanburg, SC; several cousins and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Margaret R. Snead. A private service will be held in Spartanburg, SC and a memorial Mass scheduled at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Beaufort, SC, at a later date.
