John Stephen "Steve" Roberts, 59, of Spartanburg, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Born March 26, 1951 in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Mozelle Roberts and the husband of Debbie Payne Roberts. He was a graduate of Dorman High School, Spartanburg Methodist College, and the S. C. Criminal Justice Academy. Steve retired as Captain from the Spartanburg City Police Department, and was presently Procurement and Grants Manager for the Spartanburg Housing Authority. He was a member of the S. C. Law Enforcement Officers Association, served as past Adjunct Instructor in Weapons and Driving at the S. C. Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia, and also served as past Assistant Commander of the Tactical Neutralization Team (TNT). A member of St. James United Methodist Church, he served his community thru 21 years of volunteer fire and rescue service with the Arcadia Fire Department from 1969-1974, and the Westview-Fairforest Fire Department from 1974-1990. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother-in-law, Elsa Payne of Spartanburg; three sons, Kenny Brown and wife Melissa of Spartanburg, Tommy Brown and wife Nikki of Moore, and Danny Brown of Columbus, OH; the greatest joys of his life, a granddaughter, Carson Mae Brown, and three grandsons, Austin Grant, Jamison Brown, and Addison Brown; and by a cousin, Chip Watson of Spartanburg. He was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas C. Roberts, Jr. and Richard R. "Dickie" Roberts; and his father-in-law, Kenneth Payne. Visitation will be 12:00 PM to 1:45 PM Saturday, July 31, 2010 at St. James United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM at the Church, conducted by the Rev. William Francis Malambri, III and the Rev. Keith Davis. Burial will be in Westwood Memorial Gardens. Honorary Escort will be past and present officers and employees of the Spartanburg City Police Department, the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office, Arcadia and Westview-Fairforest Fire Departments, and the Spartanburg Housing Authority. You were proud of us and most of all, you loved us. We will always love you and cherish our memories together.
