Sloane Noelle Messina passed away in her parents’ arms on June 27, 2023. Born April 28, 2023 in Spartanburg, SC to Anthony Messina and Kelly Saquin, she touched many lives during her short 2 months.
Our feisty girl came into the world kicking and screaming. 8 weeks early and weighing a mere 3 lbs., she was a fighter ready to take on the world. She only needed oxygen support for the first few days and was progressing well. Her next few weeks were spent competing with her twin brother in the race for the NICU discharge.
When she wasn’t mastering bottle feeding or being her sassy self, she enjoyed cuddling with her parents and twin and keeping the nursing staff on their toes. Sloane especially enjoyed snuggling in her mom’s arms listening to her favorite books, Love You Forever and Wherever You Are: My Love Will Find You.
Sadly, Sloane contracted a virus just a week before she was to be discharged. Her last 34 days of life were spent battling an illness that eventually took her from us. Sloane was able to spend her final moments in her loving family’s arms and cuddle with her twin brother one last time. She fought valiantly to the end.
Sloane taught us to live and love in each moment. She was one of the strongest and bravest people we have ever met. We are grateful for the short time we had with her and will feel her impact for a lifetime.
Sloane joins her maternal grandmother, Joan Saquin, in Heaven.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her big brother, Wyatt; twin brother, Raineldo; and dogs Mya and Max. She is also survived by maternal grandfather, Dr. Raineldo Saquin; paternal grandparents James C. and Kathy Messina; Aunts and Uncles, Candice (Tom) Rich, Joe (Allie) Saquin, Rene Saquin, Andrea Saquin, Dawn (Igor) Packo, Chris Saquin, & James B. Messina; 9 cousins, several second cousins, and great aunts and uncles.
Donations can be made in memory of Sloane to Madelyn’s Fund or March of Dimes.
A private Celebration of Life will be held on August 5 in Boiling Springs, SC. A funeral service will be held at a future date in Kane, PA.
A heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Spartanburg Regional NICU and PICU and Levine Children’s Hospital NICU.
