Sigmund Litoff

Sigmund "Sig" Litoff, 84, of Spartanburg, SC, died Thursday, October 3, 2013 in his home. Born April 29, 1929 in Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Irving and Ida Litoff. A U. S. Navy veteran, he served 1951-1954 as a Chief Petty Officer. Prior to enlisting in the Navy, he attended the University of Tennessee. He retired from Horace Small Manufacturing Company (Nashville, TN) in 1991. Sig was a member of The Temple Ohabai Sholom (Nashville, TN), where he was a member of the choir for over 30 years, and Temple B'Nai Israel (Spartanburg) where he served on the Education Board and taught Sunday and Hebrew school. He was also a volunteer tutor with the Spartanburg County School system, a 30 year volunteer with BSA, a life-member of Liberty Masonic Lodge #77, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, life-member of Al Menah Shrine, 30 year member of the Shrine Band and former captain and a member of Spartan Lodge #70. Sig's passion was entertaining and bringing joy to others. He was a playwright and performer, who frequented the stages in Spartanburg and Nashville. In Spartanburg, he appeared in many productions with the Repertory Co., Little Theater, and USC Upstate Shoestring Players. In 2012, he was the recipient of the Arts Partnership Award for Spartanburg Senior Standout. Surviving are his beloved wife of 58 years, Marilyn Weinberger Litoff; son Gary Litoff (Peggy) of Spartanburg, SC; daughter Marlene Chastain (Richard) of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Rabbi Dov Chastain (Rebecca), Avi Chastain, Simcha Chastain, Elizabeth Litoff and Jonathan Litoff; great-grandchildren, Hadassa, Moshe, Chaim, and Shira Chastain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian Shain and Miriam Levine. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 4, 2013 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel (Spartanburg), by Rabbi Yossi Liebowitz and his grandson, Rabbi Dov Chastain. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Temple B'Nai Israel's Education Fund, or Hadassah (Temple B'Nai Israel, 146 Heywood Avenue, Spartanburg, SC 29302); or a charity of one's choice.
