Shirley Boyd Tate, 75, of Spartanburg, SC, died Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born June 28, 1939, at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington DC and reared in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late Simon Edward and Josephine Dee Limbo Boyd, and wife for 51 years to the late James Ryan "Jimmy" Tate. A 1957 graduate of Spartanburg High School, Mrs. Tate was a member of Morningside Baptist Church, the Lydia Sunday School Class (now The New Covenant of Joy), the Women's Missionary Union, and former longtime member of Ben Avon Baptist Church. She retired from S. B. Phillips Company and was a member of American Legion Post #28 Auxiliary. She was a former reading tutor at Pine Street Elementary School, a longtime volunteer with Piedmont Area Girl Scouts Council, the Lillie Knox Garden Club, and participated in other community activities. Survivors include her daughters, Connie Tate Cubitt and her husband Ben of Cumming, GA, and Lisa Tate Moore and her husband Billy of Boiling Springs, SC; four grandchildren, Kalle Ryan Cubitt, Benjamin Aaron Cubitt, Thomas Boyd Cubitt, and Heather Leigh-Ann Moore; sister, Joan Boyd Adair of Spartanburg; and sister-in-law, Nelleen Adair Thackston of Spartanburg. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Bill Adair. Visitation will be 2:30-3:30 PM Saturday, January 31, 2015, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 PM, at the Chapel, conducted by Chaplain Cindy Adair Inman, the Rev. Bill (Nathan) Adair, and Dr. John Boyd Adair. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307 with the Rev. Richard King officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Morningside Baptist Church, 897 South Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302; or the American Cancer Society, 154 Milestone Way, Greenville, SC 29615.
