Shirley Cartee Kinsland, 89, formerly of Spartanburg, SC, passed away on Tuesday, February 15, 2022. She had been with her daughter and son-in-law in their home in Columbia and died peacefully surrounded by much love. She was born on March 16, 1932 and was the daughter of the late B. Frank and Nannie C. Cartee and the wife of the late William Ray Kinsland, Jr.
Shirley was a retired Registered Nurse, who loved her career of caring for people. After graduating from Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing in 1953, she worked as a surgical nurse at the hospital for a few years. She often said that was one of the most interesting times of her career. After leaving the hospital in the late fifties, she began nursing in a private practice where she stayed through the late eighties. She then became the director of nursing in a senior care facility from where she retired after serving others for more than fifty years in her beloved career.
Survivors include her daughter, Susan Rowe (Michael), her much loved grandsons, Collin Rowe (Heather) and Tyler Rowe; her great grandchildren, Skylar, Hudson, Vayle and Isabelle. She is also survived by her sister, Sarah C. Ashley and her niece, Kathy Tremaine (Darrell) along with many great nieces and nephews of Corbin, KY. Her remaining family in Spartanburg are her nephew, Steven Johnson (Debbie) and their children.
Mrs. Kinsland had been a member of Drayton Baptist Church since she and her husband joined in the early 1960’s.
In lieu of flowers, she requested a donation be made to Drayton Baptist Church, 1645 Fernwood-Glendale Roa, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
