Shirley Lucille Colson Hines, 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, August 23, 2024.
Shirley was born on July 26, 1931, in Tampa, Florida, to Mamie and Curtis Colson. She was an enthusiastic Girl Scout and cherished the many trips she took with her dear Aunt Oat. Later, Shirley moved to Jacksonville, Florida, with her mother and her beloved stepfather, Johnny Leroy Hamilton. After finishing high school, she attended business school to become a secretary.
It was in Jacksonville that Shirley met the love of her life, Joseph “Joe” Maurice Hines, who was stationed at the Naval base. Together, they had three children and eventually moved to Chesnee, SC to raise their family. Shirley and Joe shared twenty wonderful years of marriage built upon a foundation of faith, love, and strength, which Shirley carried with her for the rest of her life after Joe's early passing. Shirley later moved to Spartanburg, SC to be closer to her family.
Shirley was a dedicated employee throughout her career, contributing her meticulous talents to various places of work. She began her career at Perrin and Perrin Law Firm. Later, she joined C&S Bank, where she excelled in the trust department. Shirley also brought her impeccable precision to Dillard's, becoming the go-to person for all who knew her for pristine gift wrapping. Her career concluded at Thomas Opticians, where she helped clients (and herself) find the perfect pair of stylish glasses.
Shirley had a servant's heart and was devoted to her community. She loved her church, where she volunteered weekly. Shirley also extended her generosity by volunteering with Mobile Meals. Outside of serving others, she made sure to take time for herself. She was a devoted fan of Turner Classic Movies, especially black and white films. She cherished early morning walks with her neighbors and enjoyed shopping, particularly for shoes, skincare, and lipstick.
Above all, she cherished her time with her four grandchildren in Spartanburg. Affectionately named 'Nina' by her first grandson, the name stuck, and she became 'Nina' to everyone who knew and loved her. Always ready in her Cadillac, she eagerly picked up her grandchildren and helped in any way she could. Nina embodied grace and strength, serving as her family’s guiding light and source of love. Her family attributes their own strength to the powerful example she set through her unwavering presence and impact on their lives.
Nina will be deeply missed for her sage advice, quick wit, ability to listen and offer compassion, her unforgettable hug with its lingering warmth, and her genuine beauty.
Nina was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Mamie and Leroy Hamilton; her father, Curtis Colson; her sisters, Anne Martin and Bonnie Dees; her brother, David Hamilton; and her eldest son, Craig Hines. She leaves behind her children: Susan Conrad and Scott (Patti) Hines; her grandchildren, Stephen (Betsy) Conrad, Laura (Stephen) Brown, Jeff (Brittany) Hines, and Marianna (Hayes) Lanford; and her great-grandchildren, Jack and Tess Conrad, and Teegan and Avery Hines.
The family would like to thank Rachel Harling and Samantha Lancaster for their tender, loving care to our Nina over the last months. We would also like to thank the amazing staff at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice House who made her last few days so peaceful and comforting.
Her Memorial Service will be held at 2:30 PM, Friday, August 30, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 309 Fernwood Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29307, with Rev. Dr. Steve Wise officiating.
The family will receive friends before the service at 1:30 PM in the Westminster Presbyterian Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church or Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
