Sherman Meek

July 1, 1925 — July 26, 2022

Sherman Edward Meek, 97, widower of Shirley Marie Rice Meek, died Tuesday, July 26, at his home in Spartanburg. He was born on July 1, 1925 in Lamar, Oklahoma to William Washington Meek and Martha Frances Mankin Meek.

A veteran of World War II, he was a prisoner of war in Germany for six weeks. He was a graduate of Oklahoma A&M College with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and spent his career working with Phillips Petroleum and Phillips Fibers in Dumas, TX, La Porte, TX, Cartersville, GA, Spartanburg, SC, and Rocky Mount, NC. He retired in 1987, and he and Shirley returned to Spartanburg from Rocky Mount, NC to be close to family.

He is survived by his children, Larry Olen Meek (Marie) of La Porte, Texas, Del Kent Meek (Debbie) of Roswell, GA, Martin E. Meek (William C. Cooper) of Enoree, SC, and Carla Gail Bailey of Spartanburg, SC. Also surviving are grandchildren, Frank Edward Meek (Barbara Shows) of Austin, TX, Debra Jean Arcement (Remy) of Picayune, MS, Wesley Charles Meek (Lindsay) of Woodstock, GA, Kelley Marie Meek of Marietta, GA, Joshua Edward Bailey of Spartanburg, SC and Frank Trimmier Bailey (Laura) of Duncan, SC, and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a son-in-law, Frank S. Bailey.

Visitation will be held at 6:00 – 8:00 PM Monday, August 1, 2022 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. A graveside funeral service will be at 11:00 am. Tuesday, August 2, 2022 in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC, conducted by The Rev. Robert Brozina.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church,1320 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
