Betty “Shelley” Foster Crow, 71, wife of Wade Coggins Crow, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 13, 2022 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.
Shelley was born August 15, 1950, in York, S.C. to Irvin John Foster and Gladys Shelley Foster. She attended York High School and graduated from Winthrop College, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. Prior to raising her own children, she taught first grade at Jesse S. Bobo Elementary and, later, preschool classes at First Presbyterian Church Weekday School. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Friendship Garden Club, and the “Wednesday Sistas.”
Shelley lived her life according to her teacher’s and mother’s heart, always with a good-natured ability to see life through the eyes of the children around her, always with an inclination toward a fun craft project or a good game, and always supporting her family’s efforts ahead of her own. She loved spending time with Wade, her husband of fifty years, and their friends: in earlier days through bridge games, backyard volleyball matches and Clemson football games; later through travels or perched along the waterfront – particularly at Lake Bowen, Edisto Beach or Sunset Beach. As a Foster, she appreciated a good laugh, and, as “Miss Highway 5,” she was quite capable of generating one. She reveled and excelled in her role as chief antidote to the strong engineering strain in her household.
Shelley was preceded in death by her brother, Irvin John “Johnny” Foster, Jr. She is survived by her husband, Wade, four children and nine grandchildren: Emily Neely (Kam) of Spartanburg and their children Foster, Wade Cooper and Ramsey; Hamp Crow (Kristin) of Spartanburg and their children Anna, Wade Owen, and Sam; Jean Crowther (Joe) of Portland, Oregon and their children Rita and Edie; Hal Crow (Becca) of Spartanburg and their daughter Marcelle. Shelley is also survived by her sister, Jeanie Foster Chamblee, nieces, and many cousins and other family members and friends whom she dearly loved.
