Sarah Lineberry

Sarah Margaret Hughes Lineberry, 91, of Spartanburg, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born July 15, 1920, in Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late James Leard and Mary Elizabeth Wooten Hughes, and wife of the late James Everett Lineberry. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. A 1937 graduate of Spartanburg High School, she received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Appalachian State University, and her Masters Degree from Converse College. Additional graduate work was done at Cornell University, USC, UNC, Furman University, Wofford, and Appalachian State University. She also received the Shell Merit Award to attend Cornell University. Mrs. Lineberry taught High School for 41 years and retired from Spartanburg District 6 Dorman High School. She received math fellowships from Furman University and Cornell University and also taught at Veteran's School and Spartanburg Technical College. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, SCEA-R, NREA, Spartanburg County Teachers' Association, former State president of Math Teachers of South Carolina, Cema Creitzberg-Lanham-Lydian Sunday School Class, Circle 10 Bethel United Methodist Women, S. C. Pilots' Breakfast Club, and an IPTAY member for 30 years. Survivors include her sons, James Benjamin "Ben" Lineberry and wife Nancy of Pauline, SC, and William Ronald "Bill" Lineberry and wife Janet of Orange Park, FL; grandsons, Benji Lineberry and his wife Carly, Marcus Lineberry and his wife Angie, David Lineberry, and Scott Lineberry and his wife Edith; great-grandsons, Tyler, Vaughn, and Ben Lineberry; great-granddaughters, Abby, Morgan, and Reese Lineberry; step-great-grandchildren, Josh, Danny, and Morgan Whitley; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Harley and James Hughes; and sisters, Lillian Chapman, Marie Watts, Ethel Parks, and Mary Handell. Visitation will be 2:00-2:45 PM Sunday, April 29, 2012, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM, in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David E. Nichols. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 245 South Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306. Special thanks to her caregivers, Margaret Thompson and her daughters Paula and Amy, for the kind attention that was shown to our mother during her months of declining health.
