Sara Alice Boyd Scott, 90, died Friday, September 2, 2011, at the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina in Lexington. Born August 5, 1921, in Spartanburg, she was a daughter of the late Jesse Washington and Ollie Davis Boyd. Raised in Spartanburg, Sara attended Spartanburg public schools and Converse College. Sara married Blynn Edgar Scott on June 8, 1940, and they were happily married for over 65 years, until his death in 2005. After World War II, she and Blynn returned to Spartanburg and lived there, then in Union, SC, returning to Spartanburg in 1967. Sara was a long-time substitute teacher in the Union and Spartanburg schools. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, as a Sunday School teacher, a member of the women of the church, and as a volunteer in many other ways. She was an active Mobile Meals Service volunteer and enjoyed several bridge clubs and book clubs. She is survived by her children, Blynn Boyd Scott (Nancy) of West Columbia, SC, and Richard Baxter Scott (Margaret) of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Suzann Overton (Brian) of Brentwood, TN, Harriett Pyburn (Steve) of Marietta, GA, Eleanor Bowman (Greg) of Austin, TX, and Catherine McElroy (Wade) of Austin, TX; and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her sisters, Marion Reed and Carolyn Withers. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 PM Tuesday, September 6, 2011, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Mrs. Sally Putnam. Visitation will follow at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to The Alzheimer's Association, South Carolina Chapter, 4214 Clemson Blvd, Suite L, Anderson, SC 29621; or Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304. The family would like to express appreciation to the caregivers at the Cassells Health Care Center of Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina in Lexington, SC, who cared for Sara for the past four years.
