Sandy Patterson, 73, beloved wife, sister, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 3, 2017. She was born in Cumberland, MD on December 5, 1943, to Boyd and Kitty Payton. Sandy graduated from Nursing School at Charlotte Memorial Hospital in 1963. It was in Charlotte where she met and married Dr. John A. Patterson, to whom she was a loving wife for more than 50 years. Although trained as a nurse, Sandy's passion for raising a family and caring for her sons and grandchildren was apparent to all those who knew and loved her. As a mother, her ability to add excitement and energy to every family activity increased the enjoyment and happiness of all those around her. Over the course of many decades, Sandy was a constant presence in the stands supporting her sons and grandchildren during their various sporting events. Sandy had a giver's heart and volunteered throughout her life to help both her family and her community. To that end, Sandy was a regular driver for Meals on Wheels for over 25 years and brought a little bit of sunshine to everyone she encountered on her weekly route. Reflective of her lifelong faith as a Christian, Sandy had a deep love for Christmas and what the holiday season represents. She turned her home into a winter wonderland every December and could be found at Morningside Baptist Church decorating the church well into her 60's. Surviving are her husband of nearly 51 years, John Patterson; three sons and their wives: Chris (Beth) of Spartanburg, SC, Jeff (Jessica) of Cohasset, MA, and Matt (Diana) of Lexington, SC; and eight grandchildren: Will, Drew, Clay, Caroline, Lilly, Sam, Jake, and Ella Kate. She is also survived by two sisters, Pat Bell of Charlotte, NC and Nancy Brown (Jon) of Greenville, SC. Visitation will be 2:00-2:45 PM Sunday, September 10, 2017, at Morningside Baptist Church Welcome Center. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM at the church, conducted by the Rev. Steven R. Owensby. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Morningside Baptist Church, 897 South Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302. The family is at the home of Dr. John A. Patterson.
