Sam Bates

Sam Bates, 76, of Spartanburg, SC, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at his home. Born April 22, 1937, in Henry County, KY, he was the son of the late Taylor Atchisen and Dora Frasier Bates and husband of the late Atsuko Sawaki "Nonnie" Bates. A 20 year veteran of the U. S. Air Force, Mr. Bates was an avid bowler and fisherman and of the Christian faith. Surviving is his sister, Clydea Bates Ried of Frankfort, KY; and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 25, 2014, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. Andy Case. Visitation will be at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
