Ruth Mattison

September 4, 1923 — March 22, 2015

Ruth Sherbert Mattison, 91, was born September 4, 1923, in Spartanburg, SC, to the late Dean and Mossie Shehan Sherbert. She passed peacefully into her eternal home on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home after several years of declining health. She was married for 50 years to the late B. C. Mattison, Jr., who passed away May 3, 1994. A loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, she was truly an example of a gracious southern lady. She and her delicious pound cakes and desserts will be missed by many. Ruth was a graduate of Boiling Springs High School. Mrs. Mattison was a member of United Baptist Church (previously Hayne Baptist until January 2008) for 60 years. She was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. While health permitted, she loved attending "Young at Heart" and traveling with the group. She loved to travel and was pleased that she and her husband were able to visit all the States except Hawaii. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Wayne Mattison (Lynne) of Spartanburg and Diane M. Godfrey (Tommy) of Moore; three grandchildren, Kelli Jacobs (Patrick), David Mattison (Rebekah), all of Spartanburg, and Amy Snyder (Brandon) of Lake Wylie; six great-grandchildren, Garrett Jacobs and Keslynne Mattison of Spartanburg and Anderson, Grayson, Aubree and Knoxton Snyder, all of Lake Wylie. Also left to cherish fond memories are sisters, Irene Powers of Spartanburg and Barbara Wright of Boiling Springs; and a number of much loved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Sam Sherbert; and two sisters, Frances Emory and Laura Skinner. Visitation will be 1:00-2:15 PM Thursday, March 26, 2015, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 2:30 PM, at the Chapel, conducted by her grandson, David Mattison and the Rev. Robert Emory. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Pallbearers are Tony Wright, Bobby Morgan, Larry Powers, Mike Gwinn, Harold Emory, and Mike Sherbert. Honorary escort will be members of the Friendship Sunday School Class. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to United Baptist Church Building Fund, 7319 Valley Falls Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303; or Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to her caregiver of two years, Traci Plumley, and caregiver and good neighbor, Pat Alexander, who assisted for a number of years. Also, appreciation is given to the staff of Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home who took such good care of our mom and her family during this difficult time. We are so thankful for the excellent care Dr. Thomas Robinson and his staff extended for so many years. The family will be at the home of Wayne Mattison, 7222 Lone Oak Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
