Ruth Rogers Magher, 94, of Spartanburg, died Monday, February 4, 2013 at her home. Born October 29, 1918, in Fines Creek Township, Haywood County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Webb and Fannie McGee Rogers and the wife of the late James (Jim) Thomas Magher. A 1939 graduate of the University of North Carolina-Greensboro with a BS Degree in Physical Education, she completed graduate work at UNC-Chapel Hill and John Hopkins University, then began her life-long relationship with the American Red Cross, serving on the faculty of 58 National Aquatic Schools. When not volunteering with the Red Cross, she taught at Louisburg College and at YWCA's in Norfolk, VA, Baltimore, MD, Oklahoma City, OK, and Charlotte, NC. She served 26 years as an Associate Professor and Physical Education Department Head at Queen's College in Charlotte, NC. She was a member of Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who of the South and Southwest, and the 2000 Women of Achievement, published in the United Kingdom. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Gail M. Dove and her husband John Dove of Elizabethtown, NC, and Tena Magher of Spartanburg, SC; a sister, Dorothy Greenleaf of Waynesville, NC; and seven nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mildred R. Martin and Jeri R. Wolfe. Memorial services will be held at 5:00 PM Thursday, February 7, 2013, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Frank E. Lybrand. The family will receive friends following the service at the Chapel. Burial will be private.
