Ruth Layton

February 27, 1931 — January 17, 2014

Ruth Walker Layton, 82, of Roebuck passed away Friday January 17, 2014 at her home. Born in Union, S.C. she was the daughter of Charles Stough Walker and Jessie Pinson Walker. As a graduate of Union High School and the Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing, Mrs. Layton worked for 35 years as a nurse for Dr. George Duncan and concluded her nursing career at Whitten Center in Clinton, SC. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Presbyterian Church, the Spartanburg General Hospital Nurses Alumni Association, and the Kate Barry Chapter of the DAR. Surviving are her son, Ben Layton and wife Diana of Crossville, TN; three sisters, Louise Foster and Edith Blalock both of Spartanburg, SC, and Marion McGaha of Charlotte, NC; two brothers Charles "Jim" Lionel Walker of Elizabethtown, KY and Jessie P. Walker of Union, SC; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends Larry and Albert Bearden, Charlie and Paulette Fuqua, Francis Hamilton, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Harrison and their family, Gally Langdon, Bubba Rogers and Bobby Taylor. She is predeceased by her husband, Benjamin Wofford Layton and special friend Virginia Foster. Visitation will be 2:00-2:45 PM Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at Mt. Calvary Presbyterian Church, 1399 Walnut Grove Road, Roebuck, SC 29376. Funeral Services will follow at 3:00 PM at the Church, conducted by the Rev. Richard M. Thomas and Chaplain Steve Williams. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Rd, Spartanburg, S.C. 29303.
