Ruth Gilbert

Ruth Fowler Gilbert, 94, of Converse, SC, died Thursday, May 21, 2015. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was born June 14, 1920, in Spartanburg County, the daughter of the late Fernanda and Lola Fowler. Ruth was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her greatest passions were cooking for those she loved, watching baseball, and keeping her yard immaculate. She retired from Butte Knit and also as a nanny with Stan and Mary Olenick. Mrs. Gilbert was a very faithful member of Converse Baptist Church. Survivors include her son, Wayne Gilbert of Converse, SC; grandchildren, Penny Maxwell of Spartanburg, SC, and Angela Mathis (Steve) of Cowpens, SC; seven great-grandchildren, Blake, Casey, Catelyn, Connor, Saige, Alex, and Cross. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Jim Dean Gilbert; son, Eddie Dean Gilbert; brothers, Pete, Frank, Clarence, Jack, George, and Art; and sisters, Ruby, Lillie, and Nellie. Visitation will be 3:00-3:45 PM Sunday, May 24, 2015, at Converse Baptist Church, 325 Main St., Converse, SC 29329. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 PM, at the church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Davis and eulogist, Casey Mathis. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. The family is at their respective homes.
