Russell Smith

Russell David Smith, 82, of Spartanburg, died Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Rosecrest of Inman. Born November 3, 1928, in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late William Newton and Sarah Noblett Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He retired from Spartanburg School District 6. He also taught 8th grade Math at Fairforest Middle School and taught Advanced Math for two years at Spartanburg Community College. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of American Legion Post 28, past president of the Spartanburg Math Association, a member of the National Association of Mathematicians and the National Science Foundation. His scholastic achievements include being a 1945 graduate of Spartanburg High School, a 1949 graduate of Wofford College with a Bachelor of Science degree, and a 1955 graduate of Furman University with a Masters in Education. Survivors include a sister, Emma Lou Smith Cardell and husband Robert of Cincinnati, OH; numerous nieces and nephews; and his caregiver, Stephen Henderson. He was predeceased by siblings, William Newton Smith II, Pinckney B. Smith, and Amanda Smith Gibson. Visitation will be 6:00-7:30 PM Friday, May 20, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Kermit R. Morris. Burial will be in Cedar Spring Cemetery.
