He would have celebrated his 100th birthday in less than one month. He was the oldest child of the late Brady Edward McBride and Della Harmon McBride. His maternal grandfather was the only son of seven young sons to come back from the Civil War. He was predeceased by his brothers, Ellis, Fred, and Boyce, and also a sister, Elizabeth McBride Smith. Also surviving are his in-laws who were also great friends, Walt and Ann Ratliff of Spartanburg, Bill and Ginny Ratliff of Homosassa, FL, and Agnes Barnett of Spartanburg. Mr. McBride grew up in Glenn Springs and was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church where he and his wife were married. He loved Glenn Springs. Roy graduated from Pauline High School with the best grades in his senior class; even though he missed much of each school year planting and picking cotton on the family farm. Mr. McBride was proud to serve his country during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Force. He spent four years overseas while stationed in France and Pakistan. He was the recipient of many medals for his service. Mr. McBride was the owner of McBride Coal and Oil Company that was located behind Wofford College. He later owned convenience stores, the Quicke Shop Groceries, that were very popular in the Spartanburg area during the 1950's, 60's, and 70's. He was also a member of many business and civic clubs. Roy loved Lake Lure and countless fishing trips with his good friends, Wade Lindsey and Bill Bradley. He was a wonderful father, husband, and grandfather. During his adult years, he was a member of Ben Avon Baptist Church and also Ben Avon United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 10:00-10:45 AM Saturday, November 17, 2012 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Jones Brewer.
