Roscoe VanSkite Roos, 100, of Spartanburg, died Sunday, May 30, 2010 in Sumter, SC. Born September 17, 1909 in Mt. Rose, NJ, he was the son of the late William John and Elizabeth VanSkite Roos. He married his wife, Anna Estelle Reehl, in October 1932 and she passed away in April 1997. He was the last surviving family member of his generation. He attended public school in Hopewell Township, NJ and graduated in 1927 from Hopewell High School. Among his business pursuits, he worked for Princeton Bank and Trust company in Princeton, NJ for 32 years, retiring in December 1974 as Comptroller of the bank with 10 branches. During that time, he took numerous college courses in banking, accounting, and auditing. Because of major acquisitions in the banking business at the time of his death, he was a retiree of J. P. Morgan, Chase Bank of New York City. He was a charter member of the Princeton branch of the Institute of Management Accountants in which he was very active prior to his retirement. He was always active in his church. He and Estelle moved to Spartanburg in 1975 and immediately joined St. Johns' Lutheran Church where he was a member of the Lutheran Men, the Church Council, the Finance and Stewardship Committees, and was elected Treasurer in 1977. He was a member of Princeton Lodge #38 F. & A. M. and a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 55 years. Mr. Roos was a good Christian and a very special man. He was much loved by his family, his church family, and his friends. Until he moved to Sumter in February, he continued visiting the sick and elderly church members with another member of his church. He was famous for taking his home-grown roses or baking cookies to take on these visits. He is survived by two daughters, Prudence A. Roos of Arizona and Lois R. Heal and her husband Dean of Sumter, SC; two nieces, Peg Anaya Werszila and her husband Bill of Metuchen, NJ and Linda Roos Hamilton of Somers Point, NJ; a nephew, L. Robert Roos and his wife Karen of Dallas, TX; three great-nieces and four great-nephews; and three great-great-nieces and four great-great-nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters, Martha Roos Anaya and Anna Roos, and brother Lewis Roos. Visitation will be from 10:00-10:45 a.m. Saturday, June 19, 2010 at St. John's Lutheran Church. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Church. Inurnment will follow in the Church Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Johns' Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, 415 South Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302. His daughter would like to thank the nursing staff of the Oncology Unit of Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter for their loving and tender care of her Dad, and their loving friendship and support for her.
