Robert Rice

Robert "Bob" D. Rice, 79, of Spartanburg, SC, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. He was a native of Pacolet Mills, SC, born October 8, 1933, the son of the late James Irvin and Nettie Henley Rice. Bob was the beloved husband of Betty Hayes Rice of Spartanburg, for 56½ years. A U. S. Navy veteran, he was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, where he was a former chairman of deacons, Sunday School teacher and treasurer, and also a member of Steadfast Sunday School Class whose members will serve as honorary escorts. He was formerly employed as a comptroller with Spartan Grain, and retired as an accountant with Price Construction Company. In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Steven Rice of Spartanburg; and granddaughter, Malinda C. Rice of Pacolet; two sisters, Margaret Cook of Pacolet, and Barbara Jean Grubbs of Spartanburg; two brothers, James "Woots" Rice (Nancy) of Pacolet, and Billy Rice (Frances) of Moore. He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth D. Rice of Spartanburg. Visitation will be 1:45-2:45 PM Saturday, September 21, 2013, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM, at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Glenn Rusher and the Rev. David Swofford. Burial with military rites will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Memorials may be made to the Young-at-Heart Bethany Baptist Church, 622 Alamo Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303. The family is at the home of Betty Rice.
