Bob was born February 4, 1922, in Washington, D.C., and grew up in and around Washington. He graduated from George Washington University and got his master's degree in mechanical engineering from Columbia University. He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force 1946-47. He moved to South Carolina in 1950 with the Deering Milliken Research Trust, and retired from Milliken Service Corporation. During his forty-year career he was awarded 13 patents and made many trips to Japan and Switzerland. While his health permitted, Bob was an active member of the Milliken Research Geezers and the First Monday Breakfast Group, and served on the board of the Men's Garden Club. He was a Master Gardener. He was a 53-year member of The Episcopal Church of the Advent, where he served as a Lay Reader, Sunday School teacher, as a member of the Vestry and as Junior Warden. He was a long-time member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew. He had served on the City Planning Board and the Auditorium Commission. Bob was predeceased by his second wife of 46 years, Neilie Hicks of Greenville, in 1998. Survivors include his wife, Gail Downer Rodgers McCullough; children, Robert W. McCullough III and wife Stevie of Sausalito, CA, Susan M. Shaw and husband Franklin Pruitt Shaw of Anderson, SC, and Marc H. McCullough of Plano, TX; granddaughter, Natalie M. Larsen and husband Erik of Tiburon, CA; great-grandchildren, Amelia and William Larsen; brothers, William McCullough and wife Violet, and Richard McCullough and wife Minette, all of Maryland; step-children, W. Gordon Rodgers II of the home, and G. Garnett Rodgers of Charlotte, NC; and step-grandchildren, P. Dwayne Shaw and wife Wanda and Brian K. Shaw. Inurnment will be 9:30 Saturday, October 22, 2011, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be held at The Episcopal Church of the Advent at 11:00 AM, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Clay H. Turner. A reception will follow immediately at the Piedmont Club.
